Subtitling and personal injury – join us for our March meeting

We will once again gather via Zoom this coming Saturday, March 13th, for our next general meeting, which will get under way at 1 p.m. You’ll find the Zoom information below.

Our program will feature presentations by Yun Jung (Elena) Chang and John Abramowitz. Elena, an “expert for all things Korean” and a classically trained actress who provides a wide range of translation and interpreting services, will introduce us to the world of movie subtitling. In her presentation Translating into Hollywood, A Case Study of the Oscar-Winning Film “Parasite,” Elena will discuss one crucial element that made this film highly successful in the United States—the exceptional quality of its English subtitles.

John, an attorney who has practiced personal injury law since 2011, will give us the opportunity to look at the work of a court interpreter from an attorney’s perspective. In his presentation “Anatomy of a Personal Injury Case & the Interpreter’s Role,” he will detail the anatomy of a personal injury suit, from collecting evidence, deposing witnesses, and developing a trial strategy to finally convincing a jury to find in favor of the plaintiff. He will also describe his experience of working with interpreters of various languages.
