Website Update and other absolutely riveting stuff
Hello esteemed members of AATIA!
Marc Adler here, your new(-ish) director of communications, with the update I promised at the general meeting last week.
As many of you are aware, we have been having some problems with the website, specifically the membership directory, including the search function. As promised at the meeting, an oversight committee has been formed and is in the process of finding and vetting potential consultants to hammer the kinks out of the new website, which, for its overall incompleteness, is actually a very well put-together site.
Many of you received notices of expiry of membership today. I have to apologize for this. As part of the effort to improve the website, we’ve switched hosting providers. The new hosting provider is eons ahead of the last one we had and provides a lot of useful functionality, including for running mailing lists and newsletters (like this one, for example). Very unexpectedly, however, the switchover and concomitant reconfiguration of the membership database triggered all of those email notifications. I’m still working to get to the bottom of why that happened, exactly, but – as counterintuitive as this may seem – that was actually a sign that things are moving in the right direction. I won’t bore everyone with the details. Suffice it to say that the light at the end of the tunnel is growing, and it’s not an oncoming train. (Anybody who does want to be bored with the details, on the other hand, can shoot me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will be more than happy to bore you to tears with the description.) And if you did get a notice, please disregard it for now.
On a lighter note, the board has decided to start holding casual monthly get-togethers. These will be held on the last Friday or Saturday of every month. This month it will be next Saturday, May 30th, starting at 8 PM, at a place called Opa’s (see below for info).
These are strictly informal gatherings for whoever feels like showing up and throwing back a few brewskis or coffees and talking shop (or non-shop). At least one member of the board will be there.
That’s all for now. I would like to have a name for these get-togethers that’s catchier than the unwieldy “end-of-the-month get-together,” but nothing comes to mind. “Unwinders” is literally all I could come up with, but in my defense I have been configuring mailing lists and scrutinizing database settings all day. I’m open to suggestions!
If you have any questions or comments (or name suggestions!), email email@example.com or to yours truly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I will send another update next week, as well as another notification about the upcoming get-toge—I mean, “Unwinder” ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Talk to you soon!
Opa’s website is here.
