These webinars are intended mainly for court interpreters licensed by the Texas Judicial Branch Certification Commission (JBCC) who are seeking to fulfill their JBCC continuing education requirement, but may also be useful for interpreters preparing to take the JBCC licensing exam or the federal court interpreter certification exam and for translators working in the legal field. The AI webinar will be of interest to any interpreters or translators who are curious about AI and how to use it in their work.

Researching Legal Terminology and Staying Up to Date with New Terminology that Impacts Legal Settings

In this 3-hour non-ethics webinar, participants will learn the value of staying up to date with legal and quasi-legal terminology and the importance of delivering accurate meaning of the source message by conveying legal or functional equivalence and communicating a meaningful message in the target language. Through a set of practice exercises, participants will have the opportunity to hone their skills in researching legal terminology, using online and other sources.

Conveying Meaning while Staying Faithful to Register and Accuracy

In this 2-hour ethics webinar, participants will review Canon 1 of the JBCC Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility for Licensed Court Interpreters, including the definitions of register, accuracy and completeness. Participants will be exposed to three examples of courtroom settings in which the change of register and style changed the outcome of the message delivered and will also learn how to avoid pitfalls that hinder accurate rendition of the message.

Learning to View AI as a Tool, not as a Professional Threat
Saturday, September 28, 2023 | 9:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
This 3-hour non-ethics webinar will provide an opportunity for participants to learn about the various artificial intelligence (AI) platforms available to interpreters, discuss their pros and cons, and understand the value of viewing them as a tool to improve our knowledge and skills rather than as a threat to our profession. Participants will also review the new SAFE AI taskforce guidance for using AI interpreting products in court settings. A set of practice exercises will give participants hands-on experience in using AI platforms.
