Jennifer Case, a seasoned Arabic to English freelance translator based in Maryland, serves as the programming chair for the National Capital Area Translators Association, an esteemed chapter of the American Translators Association (ATA). Having briefly resided in Jordan and Palestine, her firsthand experiences have profoundly shaped her translation approach, infusing it with an activist perspective. Her expertise lies in human rights, social sciences, immigration, and political reform. Given the inherently politicized nature of Arabic translation, Jennifer is well-versed in navigating the challenges of bias and agency within the field.

The Activist Translator: Navigating Visibility and Influence
Myth: Translators exist in the shadows, wholly impartial. Fact: Translators are often overlooked, and acknowledging and addressing our inherent biases is pivotal. In the realm of activism, where language is a powerful tool, translators play a crucial role in shaping narratives surrounding various issues, incidents, and investigations. This challenges the conventional belief in a translator’s complete invisibility and impartiality. Should translators maintain this invisibility, which extends beyond mere anonymity? Is true impartiality achievable within an activist context? This presentation delves into the intricate dynamics of invisibility, impartiality, and agency, exploring the nuanced roles of translators in the realm of activism.
