Afraid you’re going to be replaced by AI?
With all the hype about the marvels of artificial intelligence (AI), a lot of us may have wondered if AI will eventually replace us. Joanne Kim, the presenter at our October 12th general meeting, began her presentation* with some dire statistics on jobs lost to AI, but then quickly reassured us that we have nothing to fear. While AI may be a useful tool that can help us do our jobs, it can’t replace us.
Why? Because, as we all know, what we human translators and interpreters do is more than just changing words from one language to another. We bring a wealth of experience, cultural knowledge and sensitivity, and understanding of nuance, context, and linguistic diversity that AI simply cannot replicate. AI also lacks our ability to forge trust and build relationships with clients and colleagues.
Joanne’s presentation prompted a lively discussion, which continued while AATIA members and friends enjoyed networking and partaking of the tasty refreshments on offer.
We’ll get together again on December 14th for our final general meeting of 2024. Our presenter will be longtime AATIA member and former AATIA President Tony Beckwith. Save the date and plan on joining us!
