Immigrant Heritage Month
During the month of June, the United States celebrates Immigrant Heritage Month. This is to honor and celebrate immigrants’ experiences and contributions throughout our country’s history. We are a Nation of immigrants—immigrants who came to this country to seek refuge and opportunity, with each new generation participating and contributing with their unique talents and skills, making this country a world leader in science, technology, and innovation and one with a rich and diverse culture.
Many of us translators are also immigrants, and we use our language skills to connect people within the United States and not just with other cultures on the other side of the world. We use our skills to reduce barriers and make leaps across time and space. Our immigrant experiences have shaped us; they made us empathic, resilient, and knowledgeable. We provide critical services not just outside the United States but also inside and bring some sense to the customs and traditions of immigrants and their communities. We aid in all kinds of communication situations, and we build bridges to overcome socio-cultural barriers. We give a voice to those who are still learning and support organizations that have understood that the United States is not a country with a centralized culture, with just one language, but that the American landscape consists of many languages, subtypes, dialects, slang, registers, etc., as well as the echoes of the past found in the tongues of the descendants of former immigrants.
