2018-2019 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in education or related field from an accredited college or university. A minimum of three (3) years of experience translating and interpreting in Spanish with a background in project management is required.
SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbent must be able to read, write, and converse fluently in English in order to receive and to provide work-related information in a timely manner to other employees, volunteers, supervisors, school personnel, principals, and where appropriate, visitors and students. Incumbent must have excellent grammar skills and command of both the English and Spanish languages. This position is responsible for implementing systems to ensure the efficient translation of district wide materials and ensure that all community meetings are staffed as necessary with interpreters for all necessary language. Incumbent will oversee the internal Translation department as well as coordinating all contracts relating to translation at Austin ISD including Top 10 languages and American Sign Language (ASL).
JOB PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITY:
The purpose of this position is to manage and direct the Language Support Services team under limited supervision. Incumbent is responsible for developing, maintaining, and improving translation and interpretation processes. Incumbent will coordinate district-wide translation and interpretation requests, including, but not limited to, scheduling, managing, and distributing incoming requests and databases to ensure timely delivery of assignments. In addition, this position is responsible for translating and interpreting a wide variety of written and spoken district communications in English and Spanish. Tasks may include proofreading, editing and performing other quality assurance checks on written projects, as well as in-person or over-the-phone interpreting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Develop translation/interpretation plans/strategies, policy development, and implementation of operational plans to meet performance measures.
Supervise, manage, and appraise a minimum of three (3) staff members and consultants.
Manage program budget and develop guidelines.
Manage several projects on tight deadlines with minimal supervision and work independently.
Provide support to implement and expand an effective model for adequate translation and interpretation services at all schools and district-wide events.
Develop and evaluate short and long range strategic plans and establish the criteria for projects, programs, and plans.
Develop and oversee translation and interpretation request training programs. Evaluate the effectiveness of training modules and workshops to selected audiences.
Implement professional skills of the art and science of simultaneous and/or consecutive interpretation services from English to Spanish or Spanish to English for effective community and parent engagement. Many of these events occur in the evening and on weekends.
Manage databases and presentation software, such as Microsoft Office, Publisher, InDesign, etc., in order to perform responsible clerical duties including scheduling, reports, record keeping, maintaining databases, and filing in an effective and timely manner. Proficiency in TRADOS translation software preferred.
Provide translation of documents, publications, and videos developed by school and central office administrators.
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED:
Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal; Perform other related duties as assigned; however, all employees are expected to comply with lawful directives in rare situations driven by need where a team effort is required.
