Social media and ethics for language professionals – join us for our next AATIA seminar

Join us on April 12, 2025, starting at 1:30 p.m., for a new installment of the AATIA Seminar Series. We’ll be meeting at a NEW location this time, the Asian American Resource Center, 8401 Cameron Rd, Austin, TX, US, 78754. We’ll be treated to a special presentation by interpreter Sarah Brown (RID CI/CT, BEI Master and Court Certified).

A reminder that “Seminar Series” is the new name for our regular bimonthly general meetings. Like the general meetings, all seminars in the series are open to the public and free of charge. Anyone with an interest in translation/interpretation or other language-related professional activities is welcome to attend.

Social media and ethics for language professionals

Many of us now live our lives on social media. Whether it’s Facebook, Twitter/X, Blue Sky, Instagram, TikTok, Twitch, YouTube, or LinkedIn, we have many avenues to share our thoughts and activities (as well as what we ate for breakfast)! In this world of online social culture, as private practice interpreters, we are a business. How do we ethically market ourselves as a business? Where do we draw the lines and where might overlap occur between our professional lives and online presence? Where do we avoid taking up space online that does not belong to us? During this seminar, participants will engage with each other in a discussion of real-life scenarios, using ethical decision-making to determine the best course of action.

About the presenter

Born to hearing parents who both knew sign language, Sarah Brown had exposure to sign language and the Deaf community from a young age. While working toward her Bachelor’s degree, Sarah obtained her first interpreter credential and began her private practice journey, which has continued for nearly three decades. She is currently in a full-time role as the access coordinator and designated interpreter for the National Deaf Center.
